This is a phrase fosterers hear all the time. People mean well when they say it, but unfortunately it’s detrimental to our cause. It hurts the ones doing the fostering, since it implies they don’t love the animals they’re caring for which is far from the truth. Giving up our foster animals is the whole point–we love them and care for them until we find that right place for them. By letting go, we are able to save more lives. As the famous fosterer Kitten Lady (Hannah Shaw) says “goodbye is the goal.”
I started fostering when my dog of ten years passed away. After a few months I missed having a companion but wasn’t ready to adopt yet. Fostering can be difficult–not just in saying goodbye, but many of the animals come in scared and unsure of this new life. We don’t always know their backgrounds so we’re learning along with them. But I can guarantee it’s one of the most rewarding things to see the progress they animal makes and then to see the joy on their new family’s faces.
If you think you are ready, we are always looking for more fosterers. No matter the size of your space or your available free time, there is an animal(s) out there who could use your help. We provide all the resources you need so you don’t have to worry about cost. Please join us in saving lives–we’re here to help you through the process.
