Frequently asked questions
What are the things I should do to improve my chances of being approved?Â
We will be doing vet and personal reference checks as well as landlord checks for any renters. Please make sure these people are aware you are looking for a dog. We will ask your vet for confirmation that your current pets are spayed/neutered, up to date on vaccines, and dogs are on monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention. If you get any of these from other places, please email us proof at adopt@gfrpets.org. We will look at how well your lifestyle and home fit the particular animal you have applied for, so detailed information in your application is more likely to help you than one-word answers to questions.
What is the process of adopting a cat?
Since all of our animals live in foster homes, we do not have a time to drop by and look at animals. However, many of our adoptable cats can be seen in the condos of the Pekin, IL Petco. We ask that you fill out an application prior to meeting the cat or fill one out at Petco.
What happens if I am approved?
Generally speaking, cats and kittens can be adopted on the same day at the Pekin Petco condos or at adoption events. If one of our volunteers cannot be reached by Petco, it may take a few days to approve the application.
Can I just have an application on file that is pre-approved?
Adopters are not given blanket approval for any cat. Rather, we work with the applicant to find a cat that best matches their situation.
How will I be notified if I have been approved for the cat I requested?
A foster coordinator will contact you to discuss your application in more detail if the application looks good.
What happens if I don’t get “picked” for the cat?
We will notify you if you have been denied. Often, there are more than one suitable applicant for a cat, especially with kittens and pure-bred adults. We will do our best to notify you if the cat has been adopted, but the decentralized nature of foster-based rescues sometimes makes it difficult.
How much is the adoption fee?
The adoption fee for kittens is $125, 2 kittens are $225, and cats 6 months or older are $100. Those with specific health issues may be more to help cover their cost of treatment. Specific fees are listed in their bios. This fee helps covers their spay/neuter, vaccines, deworming, heartworm and flea/tick preventatives and microchip registration.
What if the cat has behavioral or health problems once they are adopted?
We do our best to identify and disclose any behavioral issues or medical conditions that we know about the animal. However, cats can react differently in new environments and their behavior may be different. Please give them a chance to settle down. Any medical costs after adoption are the responsibility of the pet owner.
Can I return the cat if it doesn’t work out?
Yes. If the cat appears not to be a good fit for your household, you can return the cat in the first 21 days and receive your adoption fee back. After 21 days, we will take the cat back for any reason, but you cannot receive a refund.
